Ryan Pool is a Director at the firm who practices in a diverse set of technologies, including the Biotech, pharmaceutical, mechanical, and design arts. He specializes in patent drafting, patent prosecution, and portfolio management. Mr. Pool joined the firm in 2009.
His practice has involved considerable work in the international patent sphere and he has developed expertise in the patent laws of many foreign nations. Developing this understanding of the world’s differing standards of patentability and other patent issues has enabled him to help his clients build and maintain worldwide patent portfolios.
Mr. Pool is the current Chair of AIPLA’s IP Practice in Europe Committee and leads an annual delegation through Europe visiting the leadership of the various IP institutions, for example, the EPO, EUIPO, and WIPIO. He has also been invited to conduct several IP practice seminars for Japanese Patent Attorneys thought various industry organizations and is also a member of the AIPLA IP Practice in Japan Committee and regularly speaks at their events.
Mr. Pool makes an effort to stay on the leading edge of US patent prosecution by regularly conducting analytical research into the holdings of the PTAB and Federal Circuit. His work was featured in the 100th anniversary edition of the Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society. Mr. Pool’s works have been published in several peer reviewed patent journals on a variety of topics. Mr. Pool is specially focused on techniques which can increase prosecution efficiency and is a Pioneer in use petitions to achieve this goal.
Mr. Pool also pioneered strategies to help Biotech clients in the diagnostic space navigate the troubled waters of US patent practice in wake of the USPTO 101 guidelines and Amgen decision regarding 112 written description and enablement issues which especially trouble inventions using antibodies.
Mr. Pool is spoken before many IP groups in the US and abroad including, the USPTO the EPO, the JPO, the University of Houston, the University of South Carolina, the Max Planck Institute, the University Grants Commission, AIPLA, IPO, CIPA, GRUR, PLI, Lawline and other.
Mr. Pool a registered patent attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and in the courts of Florida.
Before joining the firm, Mr. Pool worked as a state’s attorney, where he gained considerable trial experience prosecuting misdemeanor and felony cases. He also worked for a private civil litigation law firm before joining MWZB.
Mr. Pool was born and raised in South Carolina and is an avid Disc Golfer in his spare time.
